Egypt will roll out its first-ever bachelor's degree in banking sciences starting in the 2025/2026 academic year, in a move aimed at closing the gap between higher education and labour market demands in the financial sector.

The new programme is the result of a joint effort by the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE), the Ministry of Higher Education, the Supreme Council of Universities, and the Egyptian Banking Institute (EBI). It will initially launch in select public university commerce faculties and be taught in English under a credit-hour system.

The curriculum includes modules on digital banking, financial inclusion, risk management, sustainable finance, and ESG governance. Students will also undergo practical training at Egyptian banks as part of the degree.

Announced at a launch event on Monday, the programme is designed to address the growing demand for skilled professionals in Egypt’s banking sector, especially amid ongoing digital and regulatory shifts.

CBE Governor Hassan Abdalla, Higher Education Minister Ayman Ashour, Supreme Council Secretary-General Mostafa Refaat, and EBI Executive Director Abdel-Aziz Nossier attended the launch, along with a host of university and banking sector representatives.

The Supreme Council of Universities approved the unified academic framework for the programme in May.

During the launch event, CBE Governor Hassan Abdalla described the programme as a long-term investment in Egypt’s financial future: "This is a pioneering step to prepare a new generation of highly qualified banking professionals. Empowering youth with world-class banking skills is a strategic investment that will support financial stability and drive national economic development."

Higher Education Minister Ayman Ashour emphasized the ministry’s push for modern, market-aligned education: "This programme is the first of its kind in Egypt, combining academic depth with practical exposure. It reflects a new model of cooperation between higher education institutions and national economic bodies such as the Central Bank."

Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Universities Mostafa Refaat said the degree is designed to meet both domestic development goals and international standards, as part of Egypt’s Vision 2030 strategy.

EBI Executive Director Abdel-Aziz Nossier added: “This is not just an academic initiative. It is a workforce development tool that combines modern teaching techniques with the expertise of banking professionals. Our goal is to build a generation capable of shaping the future of banking in Egypt.”

The curriculum also reflects wider shifts in the sector—including digital innovation, sustainable finance, and responsible banking practices—positioning graduates to meet evolving regional and global demands.
