In a statement on Saturday, the Islamic world’s most influential Sunni institution said the move was “a permanent stain” on the conscience of international bodies that had failed to confront such crimes.
It urged an end to “policies of arrogance and violence” that ignore people’s rights, defy international law and United Nations (UN) resolutions, and commit further massacres and violations against Palestinians.
Al-Azhar called for unified Arab, Islamic, and international efforts, and intensified political, diplomatic and legal pressure to end what it described as a “major historical tragedy.” It warned the occupation was seeking to drag the region into chaos and collapse, and stressed the need to firmly resist such actions, which it called “unprecedented in human history.”
On Friday, Egypt also condemned the Israeli cabinet’s plan, saying it aimed to entrench the illegal occupation of Palestinian territories, prolong the “war of extermination” in Gaza, destroy all means of life for Palestinians and “liquidate the Palestinian cause.”
