Midfielder Ahmed Reda gave Ahly the lead five minutes after halftime with a well-placed header from inside the box.
However, Hossam Hassan equalised for Modern Sport eight minutes later. Modern Sport took the lead in the 74th minute through Ali El Fil, who headed home to make it 2-1.
Ahly responded quickly, with defender Yassin Marei heading in the equaliser just four minutes later.
Despite dominating possession, Ahly struggled to convert their control into clear-cut chances.
Mahmoud ‘Trezeguet’ Hassan came close to claiming the lead three minutes before the break with a powerful effort from outside the area that narrowly missed the left post.
In the second half, head coach José Ribeiro made several substitutions, bringing on Taher Mohamed Taher and Karim Fouad to replace Mohamed Magdy ‘Afsha’ and Mohamed Shokry.
Later, Ahmed ‘Koka’ Nabil, Nejc Gradišar, and Achraf Bencharki were also introduced in search of a winner.
Ahly's best opportunity came five minutes before full time when Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane’s header struck the crossbar.
Taher followed up with a close-range effort, but it was blocked by a resilient Modern Sport defence.
The referee added nine minutes of stoppage time, during which Ahly continued to press, but their efforts were repeatedly thwarted by a compact and disciplined Modern Sport back line.
