The crash, which involved his motorcade on the Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road, occurred around 11pm near the 42-kilometre mark of the highway.
The minister was on his way to New Alamein and Alexandria to inspect ministry projects.
According to media reports, several vehicles in his convoy collided and overturned, affecting four cars, including the one he was in.
Minister Esmat and his wife were transported to Sheikh Zayed Specialized Hospital for precautionary examinations. He was treated for a suspected hand fracture, while his wife had minor bruises.
Two members of the minister’s security detail were also injured; one suffered a pelvic fracture and a cut above the eye, while another sustained a broken leg and a suspected concussion.
The driver of the security vehicle and other team members received minor cuts and bruises, according to the sources.
A brief statement from the electricity ministry said the accident also resulted in injuries to the driver of the security vehicle and one member of the security detail, who sustained minor bruises and cuts.
Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the accident, with initial assessments pointing to potential speeding, reduced visibility, or a technical malfunction.
Egypt recorded 5,260 road traffic fatalities in 2024, a 10.3 per cent decline compared to the 5,861 deaths reported in 2023, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).
The number of deaths per 100,000 people dropped from 5.6 in 2023 to 4.9 in 2024, while the number of deaths per 100 accidents declined from 8.3 to 6.9 over the same period.
However, the number of road accident injuries increased to 76,362 in 2024, up 7.5 percent from 71,016 injuries in 2023.
