The runoff follows the casting of ballots by Egyptians abroad on 25–26 August at 126 polling stations in 117 countries, under the supervision of ambassadors and diplomats.

Voting will conclude on Thursday, with final results expected on 4 September.

On 12 August, the National Election Authority (NEA) reported a 17.1 percent turnout in the first round of Senate elections—up from 14.2 percent in 2020.

Of the 100 seats contested by individual candidates, 95 were decided in the opening round, leaving ten candidates competing for the remaining five seats.

The 300-member Senate—Egypt’s upper chamber of parliament—has a largely consultative role, with legislative power vested in the House of Representatives.

Its composition is divided evenly: one-third elected through individual candidacy, one-third via closed party lists, and one-third appointed by the president.

The National Unified List, the only party list in the race, has already secured its share of seats.

By law, women must hold at least 10 percent of Senate seats.

Members serve five-year terms.

The Senate vote forms part of Egypt’s broader electoral calendar, with parliamentary elections for the House of Representatives scheduled for November.
