Deep inside the body, in the twilight of the intestines, another world breathes — unseen yet vital. Inside every human lives a universe of microorganisms: bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa. Together they form the gut microbiome.
This hidden universe, larger in number than human cells, contains an estimated 40 trillion organisms thriving in the digestive system.
They perform miracles that our bodies cannot do alone: breaking down fibres, producing vitamins, regulating immunity, protecting the intestinal lining, and sending chemical signals such as serotonin to the brain — creating the mysterious “gut-brain” connection.

Partners in balance
What makes them inhabitants rather than invaders? They live with us in symbiosis — a silent covenant of balance. They ask only for harmony: a healthy inner climate, balanced nourishment, and peace. In return, they make our survival possible.
Body as a cosmos
If we rise to another level of reflection and ask: What is the human body made of?
The human body is made of more than fifty trillion living cells — born from stem cells, dividing, growing, dying, and renewing in endless cycles.
Each cell is itself a universe: a membrane, cytoplasm, organelles with precise functions, a nucleus, electrons, protons, and neutrons — all of which are born from quarks, woven from vibrating strings that exist as both matter and energy
Ultimately, we are energy.
A dialogue among cells
Imagine a single cell whispering to its neighbour, aware only of its small world. It divides, fulfils its task, and lives among trillions of others. Then, one day, it discovers it belongs to something greater: arteries, a heart, a brain, a body.
Suddenly, it sees that this body moves, thinks, loves, suffers — this body is alive.
With awe it wonders: How did we not know? How did we not see that we are part of a being millions of times larger than us?
Might we humans be like that cell — tiny beings on a fragile planet, drifting in a galaxy of hundreds of billions, within a greater cosmic body that itself is alive?
Perhaps the universe is not empty stone and dust but a living, conscious whole — and we its smallest cells.
The question of consciousness
Since childhood, I have felt there is more to the universe than matter and energy. Looking at the sky always brought questions. My bond with nature was never that of observer and object, but of belonging—an inner knowing that we are all part of a living whole, hidden yet vibrant.
Are we alone in silence, or does silence itself have a soul?
Is consciousness an accident, or a window through which existence knows itself?
Are we cells within a greater mind?
Is the universe alive? Conscious?
A dialogue between twins in the womb
I recall a parable, adapted from Wayne Dyer, of two unborn twins conversing in the womb.
One asked: “Do you believe in life after birth?”
The other replied: “Perhaps we are here to prepare for what lies ahead. Surely there must be something beyond birth.”
The first scoffed: “Nonsense. There is no life after birth. What kind of life could that be?”
The second said: “Maybe we’ll walk with our legs, eat with our mouths. There will be more light than here and senses we cannot yet imagine.”
The first laughed: “Absurd! Walking is impossible. Eating with our mouths? Ridiculous! The umbilical cord provides all we need — and it is too short to sustain any other life. Birth is the end.”
The second whispered: “Maybe we will no longer need the cord. I believe there is something greater.”
The first argued: “If there is life, why has no one returned? Birth is the end — beyond it lies only silence and nothingness.”
The second replied with calm conviction: “I don’t know, but I believe we shall meet Mother, and she will care for us.”
The first mocked: “Mother? You truly believe in a mother? Where is she?”
The second answered: “She is all around us. We are within her, sustained by her, surrounded by her. Without her, this world would not exist.”
The first insisted: “I cannot see her, so she does not exist.”
The second concluded: “Sometimes, in silence, if you listen deeply, you can sense her presence. You may even hear her loving voice, calling to us from above.”
When everything connects
Trillions of microbes within trillions of cells, within billions of humans, upon a planet among billions of galaxies, within an endless universe of uncountable stars.
Everything belongs to something greater.
The whole is alive.
The whole sustains by being sustained.
The whole is matter and energy at once.
And the Creator is within us, and we dwell in Him, and from Him.
