The 26-year-old sustained a knee ligament injury while playing for Egypt in their goalless draw with Burkina Faso in a 2026 World Cup qualifier on Tuesday. He was forced off in the opening minutes of the Group A match and replaced by Osama Faisal.
Egypt’s team doctor, Mohamed Abou Elela, said late on Tuesday that Marmoush had suffered a knock to his knee ligament. The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) added in a statement that the striker would undergo scans after returning to Cairo on Wednesday.
“Initial results on a scan performed in Egypt indicate he will not be available for the Manchester derby on Sunday, and he will now return to Manchester for more assessment and to begin his rehabilitation,” City said on their official website, without giving further details.
Marmoush joined City in January from Eintracht Frankfurt and quickly impressed, scoring eight goals in 28 appearances so far.
City are currently 13th in the Premier League table with three points from three matches, having won once and lost twice.
United sit ninth with four points, having won one, drawn one, and lost one.
