The Philippines recovered from their 3-0 loss to Tunisia in the opening match, defeating Egypt 29-27, 23-25, 25-21, and 25-21.
The win marks the hosts’ first-ever victory at a Volleyball World Championship.
Egypt, making their eighth consecutive appearance at the tournament, had started strong on Sunday with a 3-1 win over Iran in their Pool A opener.
Ranked 23rd in the world before the tournament, Egypt will now face a must-win match against Tunisia on Thursday to keep their hopes alive of advancing to the next round of the 32-nation contest.
Iran will play the Philippines on the same day.
All four Pool A teams currently have three points, meaning the winners of Thursday’s matches will qualify directly for the quarterfinals.
