The 26-year-old clocked 50.69 seconds to finish fifth in the third semi-final, placing 16th overall among the 24 athletes who reached the final.

Only the top eight advanced to Thursday’s final.

Hemida had reached the semi-finals after placing third in her heat with 50.36 seconds on Saturday, fuelling hopes she could become the first Egyptian woman to reach a 400m final at a global championship.

The biennial competition runs until 21 September at Tokyo’s Olympic Stadium and features more than 1,800 athletes from around the world.
