Australia and Canada recognize State of Palestine

Australia and Canada have officially recognized the State of Palestine ahead of the United Nations General Assembly on Monday.

Australia’s recognition is part of a “co-ordinated international effort to build new momentum for a two-state solution,” Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong said in a joint statement.

The statement continued, “In doing so, Australia recognizes the legitimate and long held aspirations of the people of Palestine to a state of their own.”

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announcing the recognition in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).

"Canada recognizes the State of Palestine and offers our partnership in building the promise of a peaceful future for both the state of Palestine and the State of Israel.”
