Israeli occupation forces raided the camp on Thursday evening, sparking confrontations with residents. During the assault, Israeli soldiers fired live ammunition, hitting Abu Haneen in the back, according to WAFA.
He was critically wounded and later succumbed to his injuries the following morning.
The Israeli raid in Al-Askar comes as the occupation army intensifies deadly raids and settlers escalate violent attacks on Palestinian towns and refugee camps across the West Bank.
According to a recent UN report, the total number of Palestinians killed by the Israeli army and settlers since 7 October 2023 in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, has climbed over 1,000. One in five of the victims is a child, including 206 boys and 7 girls. The number also includes 20 women and at least 7 persons with disabilities. This does not include Palestinians who died in Israeli detention during the same period.
Earlier this week, Kareem Jabareen, spokesperson for the Israeli human rights organisation B’Tselem, told Al-Ahram Weekly that what is happening in the West Bank “represents the other face of the war on Gaza.”
He explained that “Israel is waging an open war on Palestinian existence through daily raids and bombardments that have killed more than 250 Palestinians in the West Bank since the beginning of the year.”
Jabareen added that the Israeli authorities “have created a suffocating reality for Palestinians through more than 1,000 checkpoints and military gates closing off towns and villages.”
Human rights organizations warn that continued settler attacks amid army complicity and the absence of accountability could mark a new and more dangerous stage in the West Bank, one that may see further settlement expansion and forced displacement.
They urge urgent international intervention to halt the violations and protect Palestinian civilians and farmers on their land.
