In a special interview aired on Friday with AlQahera News TV channel, following a series of Palestinian faction meetings in Cairo, Mustafa Barghouti, the Secretary-General of the Palestinian National Initiative, offered high praise for Egypt’s role in the current conflict.
Barghouti is among the leading figures of Palestinian factions who arrived in Cairo in the past 48 hours, to hold a series of meetings with the Egyptian officials as part of Egypt’s ongoing efforts to foster Palestinian national consensus on US President Donald Trump’s plan to end the war in Gaza
He stated that the most serious conspiracy facing the Palestinian people—the "ethnic cleansing and displacement" from the Gaza Strip—was successfully averted thanks to Cairo’s firm stance.
"If it were not for this stern, clear, and decisive position, we would not now be talking about a ceasefire," he asserted, noting that the Israeli objective of ethnic cleansing "failed completely" due to both the heroic resilience of the Palestinian people and the strong Egyptian position.
Barghouti also acknowledged the important mediating role played by both Egypt and Qatar in brokering the ceasefire, describing it as a "significant achievement".
The current mission for the Palestinian factions, he explained, is to prevent the renewal of the "war of genocide" on Gaza, and ensure the necessary conditions for reconstruction, which will provide an added guarantee for the steadfastness and survival of the people not only in Gaza but throughout Palestine.
He stressed that a unified Palestinian position is now crucial to address ongoing dangers, including the threat of partial displacement and the dangerous expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank
Barghouti concluded by expressing his deep appreciation for Egypt’s continued efforts in gathering the Palestinian parties to unify their stance on a common vision for the next phase.
