Handball: Egypt end up with silver after extra-time heartbreak loss to Germany in IHF U17 World Championship

Egypt’s under-17 handball team claimed the silver medal at the inaugural IHF Men’s U17 World Championship after a narrow 44-43 defeat by Germany in the final on Saturday.

Egypt finished the first half trailing 18-17 before taking the lead in the second half, but Germany levelled the score 37-37 with one second left on the clock to full time.

Germany edged the Pharaohs 7-6 in extra time to secure the gold medal in the tournament, held in Morocco from 24 October to 1 November.

Egypt won four of their matches en route to the final, beating hosts Morocco 32-20, the United States 42-22, and Brazil 35-26 in the preliminary round. They then overcame Spain 31-28 in the semi-final.

In other results, Spain took bronze with a 35-23 victory over Qatar, Argentina placed fifth after defeating Brazil 39-27, and Tunisia secured seventh with a 44-41 win against the United States.
