Egypt, Russia FMs discuss Gaza, Sudan, and Iran

Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty discussed the latest developments in Gaza, Sudan, and the Iranian nuclear file with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in a phone call on Sunday.

According to the Egyptian foreign ministry, during the call, which the ministry described as part of the ongoing consultations between Cairo and Moscow, Abdelatty highlighted Egypt’s ongoing efforts to consolidate the Gaza agreement. He emphasised the need to advance the implementation of all components of the plan, which was launched at the Sharm El-Sheikh Summit for Peace on 13 October.

The plan, the Egyptian FM noted, provides a practical path toward Palestinian self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

Moreover, Abdelatty reviewed ongoing preparations for the International Conference on Early Recovery, Reconstruction, and Development of Gaza, which will be held in Cairo.

The two sides also discussed the consultations on the UN Security Council (UNSC) draft resolution on Gaza.

Abdelatty emphasised the importance of ensuring that the resolution helps consolidate the ceasefire and create conditions for a just and comprehensive peace that culminates in the establishment of a Palestinian independent state.

Similarly, the two sides addressed the situation in Sudan, where the Egyptian FM stressed the importance of an immediate ceasefire to pave the way for launching a sustainable political process that preserves the unity of the Sudanese state and its institutions.

Additionally, Abdelatty and Lavrov discussed the Iranian nuclear file and ways to reduce tensions in the region by supporting diplomatic solutions.

The Egyptian FM stressed the importance of cooperation between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He also emphasised building up confidence among the concerned parties to allow for reaching a comprehensive settlement of the Iranian nuclear issue.

Both sides also discussed Egyptian-Russian ties, emphasising the historic friendship between the two countries.

Abdelatty affirmed Egypt's commitment to further strengthening cooperation with Russia, including following up on joint strategic projects and enhancing economic and trade relations between the two nations.
