During his meeting with Guterres, Madbouly reviewed ongoing cooperation between Egypt and the United Nations and its specialized agencies, alongside preparations for Egypt’s hosting of the international conference on early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza.
Egypt, which brokered the Gaza ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas along with Qatar, Turkey, and the US, has prepared an extensive reconstruction plan in Gaza. The Egyptian plan was adopted by the Arab countries during the Arab Summit in March 2025.
The two-year-old Israeli genocidal war on Gaza, which has killed nearly 70,000 Palestinians and injured more than 173,000, mostly women and children, damaged or destroyed 83 percent of homes and buildings in the strip, leaving behind 61 million tons of debris.
Egyptian bulldozers started removing rubble in the Gaza Strip after the ceasefire deal was reached in Sharm El-Sheikh to reopen key roads and support reconstruction efforts.
Guterres praised Egypt’s sustained diplomatic efforts under President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi to restore peace in the region, commending Cairo’s pivotal role in achieving the Sharm El-Sheikh peace agreement.
In his talks with Georgieva, Madbouly discussed the status of Egypt’s programme with the IMF ahead of the Fund’s mission visit in early December to carry out the fifth and sixth reviews of Egypt’s $8 billion support program.
The meeting also touched on several positive indicators in Egypt’s economy, including strengthening foreign reserves, increased private-sector investment, and rising growth rates—particularly in productive sectors.
