Ahly’s skipper and veteran keeper, Mohamed El-Shenawy, is doubtful for Saturday’s Champions League game against FAR Rabat due to injury, according to a statement by the club.

The Reds will be facing the Moroccan side away in the second round of the prestigious continental tournament group stage.

El-Shenawy, 36, was forced to leave the pitch in the 79th minute of Saturday’s 4-1 victory over Algeria’s JS Kabylie in the opening match of the CAF Champions League group stage due to muscle issues.

“Scans revealed that El-Shenawy is suffering from an adductor muscle strain,” Ahly’s doctor, Ahmed Gaballah, said via the club’s official website without disclosing for how long the player will remain on the sidelines.

Abdel-Kader, Shokry still recovering

The Reds may also continue missing the services of winger Ahmed Abdel-Kader and left-back Mohamed Shokry as their situation remains uncertain after missing the JS Kabylie game due to injury.

“Scans also revealed that Abdel-Kader is suffering from a partial hamstring tear, while Shokry is suffering from a calf strain. The trio will undergo a rehabilitation program to prepare them to rejoin the team,” the Ahly doctor added without further details.

After Saturday’s win over JS Kabylie, Ahly now lead Group B on goal difference over Tanzanian side Young Africans, who earlier defeated Morocco’s FAR Rabat 1-0.

The Cairo giants are chasing a record-extending 13th title following their elimination from last edition’s semi-final after losing to South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns.
