In a phone call with Araghchi, Al-Thani “stressed that freedom of navigation is a firmly established principle that is not open to compromise, and that closing the Strait of Hormuz or using it as a pressure card only serves to deepen the crisis,” Qatar’s foreign ministry said in a statement.
The Qatari prime minister also reaffirmed Doha’s support for mediation efforts aimed at resolving the crisis through peaceful means and avoiding further regional escalation.
The phone call came amid intensified diplomatic efforts to halt the war. Iranian state media reported Sunday that Tehran had sent its response to a US proposal to end the conflict through Pakistani mediators.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran sent today through Pakistani mediators its response to the latest text proposed by the United States to end the war,” the official IRNA news agency said.
According to IRNA, the current phase of talks is focused solely on securing a cessation of hostilities, with broader issues to be addressed in later negotiations.
