According to the Egyptian presidency, El-Sisi and Guterres’ discussions took place during a meeting in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, on the sidelines of the Africa-France summit.
During the meeting, both sides emphasized the importance of supporting efforts aimed at reaching peaceful resolutions to conflicts in a way that preserves the sovereignty of states and the resources of their peoples.
President El-Sisi reviewed Egypt’s efforts to restore regional security and stability in coordination with key international and regional parties, stressing Cairo’s full support for Gulf states and its rejection of any attacks on their sovereignty and security.
The president praised the pivotal role of UN agencies in providing and delivering humanitarian aid, whether in Sudan or the Gaza Strip.
For his part, the UN chief pointed to the major challenges facing UN agencies, especially financial pressures, praising Egypt’s prominent role in alleviating the humanitarian suffering caused by conflicts and crises, particularly in Sudan and Gaza.
During the meeting, El-Sisi also expressed Egypt’s appreciation for Guterres’ efforts and leadership of the UN system over recent years amid highly complex international conditions and multiple crises.
He further commended the ongoing cooperation between Egypt and the UN regarding regional crises and conflicts, as well as the fruitful development partnership under the “UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2023–2027” with Egypt, which supports the country’s efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
For his part, the UN chief expressed deep appreciation for the cooperation Egypt has shown since he assumed office, praising El-Sisi’s diplomatic efforts to enhance security and stability in the Middle East and Africa, describing Egypt’s role as a cornerstone of these efforts.
The Africa-France summit, taking place on 11–12 May, is held under the title: “Africa Forward: Africa–France Partnerships for Innovation and Growth.”
The two-day summit is attended by French President Emmanuel Macron, African leaders and heads of state, senior officials from international and regional financial institutions, and representatives of African and French businesses.
