Egypt FM in New Delhi for BRICS ministerial meeting

Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty headed on Wednesday to the Indian capital, New Delhi, to participate in the BRICS ministerial meeting, scheduled to take place on 14 and 15 May.

The Egyptian foreign ministry stated that Abdelatty is scheduled to hold meetings with senior officials in the Indian government.

He is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with foreign ministers of BRICS countries and partner states, to discuss ways to enhance joint cooperation and coordination on regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Abdelatty will also meet with representatives of several major Indian companies and business leaders, as part of efforts to strengthen economic, trade, and investment relations between both countries, and to explore opportunities for cooperation across various sectors.

Formed in 2006 as BRIC, the group consisted of Brazil, Russia, India, and China, holding its first summit in 2009. South Africa joined in 2010, forming BRICS.

In 2023, BRICS expanded its membership to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE, and in 2025 Indonesia officially joined the group.

According to the World Bank, BRICS represents more than 40 percent of the world’s population, 24 percent of global GDP, and over 16 percent of world trade.
