Members of the eighth general conference of the Fatah movement re-elected Abbas on Thursday as the leader of the movement by unanimous vote, WAFA said.

The Palestinian President said, “This year is the year of democracy. We held an important conference for the Fatah youth, followed by the holding of local elections last April.”

Fatah kicked off a three-day conference to elect a new central committee, its highest leadership body, for the first time in 10 years as it faces existential challenges in the wake of the Gaza war.

“Today is the Eighth Conference of Fatah, and we are preparing for the elections of the National Council in November, as well as the general and presidential elections, starting with the drafting of the constitution, the political parties law, and the general elections law,” he continued.

Voting for the Central Committee and Revolutionary Council began at 10:00 a.m. and is scheduled to continue until 4:00 p.m., followed immediately by vote counting and the announcement of results, leading to the conference’s final statement.

The Eighth General Conference of Fatah is scheduled to conclude on Saturday with the announcement of final election results after two days of sessions held in Ramallah, Gaza, Cairo, and Beirut, with the participation of around 2,580 movement members.
