A 10-man Ahly side defeated Masry 2-0 at Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria on the final day of the Egyptian Premier League season on Wednesday, but still finished third in the table to qualify for next season's CAF Confederation Cup.

Winger Mahmoud Hassan gave Ahly a dream start, opening the scoring after two minutes with a powerful strike from inside the area.

Ahly were reduced to 10 men in the 38th minute when defender Yassin Marei was sent off for fouling Masry forward Mounder Temine as he raced clear on goal.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Ahly defended resolutely and sealed the victory in the 89th minute when Trezeguet converted a penalty to score his second goal of the match.

The win was not enough to improve Ahly's league standing after a disappointing season in which the club missed out on all major titles except the Egyptian Super Cup.

The 12-time African champions will now compete in the CAF Confederation Cup after failing to qualify for the CAF Champions League for the first time since 2003.

Ahly have made only one appearance in Africa's secondary club competition since its inception in 2004, when they dropped from the CAF Champions League in 2014 and went on to win the title.
