Telecom Egypt (WE) has launched its Fiber-to-the-Room (FTTR) service with Chinese technology company Huawei to improve home internet and broadband connections in Egypt, according to a statement from WE on Sunday.

The service aims to provide stable, fast, and seamless internet connectivity and improve wireless network coverage in homes across Egypt to ensure efficient performance, using Huawei’s technology alongside WE’s technical support and installation services.

FTTR technology is an in-home fiber optic networking solution designed to address connectivity problems caused by the growing number of connected devices and the spread of multi-room and multi-story homes.

The technology is intended to meet users’ high-speed internet needs while maintaining network stability and performance. It also serves as a “smart, fully integrated in-home digital infrastructure that empowers households to fully unlock the potential of the latest global technologies,” WE Vice President and Chief Consumer Officer Mohamed Eltouny said.

Internet usage in Egypt has continued to grow, with 7.9 million new mobile internet users added in April, while mobile internet consumption increased by 12 percent compared with the same period in 2025.

FTTR technology also supports the growing demand for digital services and smart home applications through the management of fiber cables installed in existing home ducts or through newly introduced transparent adhesive fiber cables.

Egypt’s communications infrastructure and digital economy have been growing rapidly alongside increased reliance on internet-based services across all sectors of daily life and the expansion of digital transformation initiatives.

This aligns with the country’s digital transformation strategy as Egypt seeks to strengthen its position as a regional hub for fiber optic network infrastructure and attract local and foreign private sector investment amid ongoing regional tensions.

Huawei’s new technology is aimed at heavy internet users who rely on digital services for remote work, education, entertainment, gaming and other digital activities, as well as regular consumers and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which account for over 90 percent of Egypt’s private sector.

SMEs continue to face challenges due to limited digital awareness among some merchants and the continued reliance on cash payments. As a result, only about 53 percent of SMEs have adopted digital payments, prompting payment companies such as Visa to expand secure digital payment solutions to rural areas and underserved governorates.

The partnership also builds on Telecom Egypt and Huawei’s plans to introduce advanced technological solutions in preparation for the rollout of  5G services across Egypt while also improving 4G capabilities.

Huawei also plans to continue expanding its partnerships in Egypt and across Africa as demand for AI-enabled infrastructure and digital services grows.

Egypt has invested around $6 billion since 2019 in fixed and mobile internet infrastructure to increase average fixed internet speeds by 16-fold.
