Egypt set for hotter week as temperatures edge towards 44C

Ahram Online , Saturday 30 May 2026

If the weekend felt warm, the coming days are unlikely to offer much relief Temperatures across Egypt are expected to climb steadily from Sunday through Thursday, with parts of Upper Egypt forecast to hit a sweltering 44C by the end of the week.

The gradual warming trend will be felt across the country, with hot weather expected in Greater Cairo and the Nile Delta and very hot conditions developing in the south, the Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) reported. The Mediterranean coast will remain the coolest part of the country, though even there temperatures are expected to edge higher.

Mornings should remain relatively pleasant, but commuters may have to contend with fog between 4 am and 8 am on roads in and around Greater Cairo, the Canal cities, central Sinai and northern Upper Egypt. The EMA warned that visibility could be significantly reduced at times.

There is a small consolation for those hoping for a break from the heat: light rain is forecast on Sunday in parts of the northern coastal governorates and the northern Delta.

Winds are also expected to pick up intermittently across several regions throughout the week.

In Greater Cairo, daytime highs are forecast to rise from 33C on Sunday to 35C by Thursday, while overnight temperatures will climb from 20C to 23C.

Further south, the heat will become more intense. Temperatures in northern Upper Egypt are expected to reach 40C by Thursday, while southern Upper Egypt is forecast to record the highest readings in the country, peaking at 44C.

In other words, summer appears to be arriving ahead of schedule.
