Egypt’s net international reserves (NIRs) inched up to $53.13 billion at the end of May 2026, up from $53 billion at the end of April 2026, the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) announced on Sunday.

According to the CBE, the NIRs rose by $125 million in May, maintaining an upward trajectory over the past few months.

The country's reserves stood at $52.8 billion in March, $52.7 billion in February, and nearly $52.6 billion in January.

The increase comes as Egypt continues to build its reserves, manage pressure on its currency, and strengthen its ability to withstand external risks and economic shocks linked to regional geopolitical tensions.

Reserves have continued to grow throughout 2025 and since the start of 2026, following corrective measures introduced by the CBE on 6 March 2024, including a six-percentage-point interest rate hike.

The move was aimed at curbing high inflation, stabilizing prices in the domestic market, and boosting foreign currency liquidity to support higher remittance inflows.

The CBE has warned that its inflation target of 7 percent, with a margin of plus or minus 2 percentage points, by the fourth quarter of 2026 could face upward risks if the regional conflict persists.

These measures form part of the objectives of Egypt’s programme with the International Monetary Fund, including the $8 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF) programme and the $1.3 billion Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF).

The IMF is currently in Cairo to conduct programme reviews and is expected to decide by 15 June, which would unlock a new disbursement of around $1.6 billion for Egypt.
