Egyptian pound remains stable on Sunday’s COB

The Egyptian pound remains stable at the start of the business week, still trading at just below EGP 52 per dollar on Sunday’s close of business (COB), according to the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE).

The currency traded at EGP 51.75 for buying and EGP 51.89 for selling on Sunday, unchanged from Thursday's close of business, when it had strengthened by EGP 0.12, or 0.23 percent, from Wednesday's rates of EGP 51.88 and EGP 52.01, respectively.

Despite the recent recovery, the pound remains around EGP 3.9, or 8.13 percent, weaker than its pre-conflict rate of EGP 47.9 against the US dollar.

Across local banks, the highest exchange rates on Sunday ranged between EGP 51.76 and EGP 51.84 for buying and between EGP 51.86 and EGP 51.94 for selling at nine banks, including HSBC, National Bank of Kuwait (NBK), and Banque Misr.

Meanwhile, the lowest rates ranged from EGP 51.74 to EGP 51.75 for buying and from EGP 51.84 to EGP 51.85 for selling at three banks, including Al Baraka Bank Egypt, Crédit Agricole Egypt, and Egyptian Arab Land Bank.

Other currencies
 

The euro continued to weaken against the Egyptian pound, trading at EGP 59.61 for buying and EGP 59.79 for selling on Sunday, down from EGP 60.19 and EGP 60.37, respectively, on Thursday. The European currency nevertheless remains around EGP 3.15 above its pre-conflict level.

The British pound traded at EGP 69.03 for buying and EGP 69.24 for selling on Sunday, down from EGP 69.59 and EGP 69.80, respectively, on Thursday. It nevertheless remains nearly EGP 4.26 above its pre-conflict level.

Gulf currencies also weakened against the Egyptian pound. The Kuwaiti dinar traded at EGP 168.91 on Sunday, down from EGP 169.1 on Thursday, while the Bahraini dinar edged down to EGP 137.63 from EGP 137.65.

The Omani riyal traded at EGP 134.78 on Sunday, compared with EGP 134.8 on Thursday, while the Jordanian dinar slipped marginally to EGP 73.29 from EGP 73.3.

According to CBE data, Gulf currencies have depreciated against the Egyptian pound by between EGP 1.02 and EGP 11.78 since the outbreak of the US-Israeli war on Iran.

Gold
 

Gold prices resumed their decline after fluctuating for most of last week.

The gold sovereign (geneih dahab) traded at EGP 51,800 on Sunday, down by EGP 1,520 from EGP 53,320 on Thursday, according to gold trading platform iSagha.

Meanwhile, 24-karat gold followed a similar trend, trading at EGP 7,400 on Sunday, down by EGP 217.25 from EGP 7,617.25 on Thursday.
