Ahly are understood to have held advanced negotiations with Amouta after ending Thorup's tenure, with sources telling Egyptian outlets that an agreement is close.
Egyptian media outlets, including Yallakora and FilGoal, reported that the club have agreed financial terms with the 56-year-old coach.
In tandem, Moroccan outlets reported that Amouta had endorsed Ahly's sporting project and contractual conditions.
Neither Ahly nor Amouta has officially announced an agreement.
Reports suggested Amouta could sign a one-year contract with an option for a further season, while other outlets said the deal could be announced within 48 hours.
Meanwhile, former Ahly defender Ahmed Fathi is also being considered for a role within the club's new technical staff, according to Egyptian media.
Amouta is regarded as one of the most successful Arab coaches in recent years, having guided Morocco's Wydad Casablanca to the CAF Champions League title in 2017 after defeating Ahly in the final.
He also won the Moroccan league title with Wydad, lifted the CAF Confederation Cup with FUS Rabat, and enjoyed domestic success with Qatar's Al Sadd.
At international level, Amouta led Morocco's local national team to the African Nations Championship title and steered Jordan to the 2023 AFC Asian Cup final.
Reports added that Amouta had recently received lucrative offers from clubs in Saudi Arabia and Libya but chose to prioritise the Ahly opportunity.
