Cotton Queen begins its screenings across cinemas in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Its commercial release in AUE follows the film's screening featured as part of the fifth edition of Arab Cinema Week, held at Cinema Akil in Dubai (5 - 11 June).
This is the second Arab country to release this award-winning film across commercial movie theatres. In Egypt, the film has already been screened in Zawya arthouse cinema last month, and last week it was released across commercial cinemas.
The film celebrated its world premiere at the prestigious 82nd Venice International Film Festival, where it was nominated to Critics' Film Award, before going on to capture the coveted Golden Alexander for Best Feature Film at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, where it received several awards, including the Golden Alexander Award for Best Feature Film, Best Score Award, and Best Artistic Achievement Award.
It also won the TV5 Monde Award for Best First Feature – Carthage Film Festival, Audience Award at Doha Film Festival, Jury Prize for Best Film at Luxor Film Festival,
Cotton Queen follows Nafisa, a young woman living in a Sudanese cotton-farming village whose life is transformed when a businessman introduces plans for development and genetically modified cotton, sparking a struggle over land, identity, and the future of the community.
Originating from her short film Al-Sit (2020), the director Suzannah Mirghani has expanded her debut project into a feature-length film, keeping the same setting, story, and cast, with one key difference: filming was relocated to Egypt.
