Outdoor spaces have become an essential extension of the home during summer, and designers say thoughtful planning, suitable materials, natural airflow, and proper lighting can transform terraces, gardens, rooftops, and poolside areas into comfortable retreats.
Terrace design
Interior designer Noha Wagdy said terraces are among the most frequently used areas during summer and should be treated as an extension of the living room.
She recommended dividing the space into simple functional zones for seating, enjoying coffee, or displaying plants, while avoiding overcrowding with furniture.
According to Wagdy, nature-inspired colours help smaller spaces appear larger and more elegant. She advised using shades of white, beige, and light grey, complemented by limited touches of blue or green in cushions and accessories.
For outdoor furniture, she recommended synthetic rattan or weather-resistant aluminium. Vertical and climbing plants can provide privacy while adding a natural touch.
Warm lighting and small lanterns can also create a relaxing atmosphere during summer evenings.
Garden seating
Landscape designer Mohamed Hatem said gardens offer greater flexibility and creative possibilities.
He stressed the importance of selecting seating areas that benefit from natural airflow and remain protected from direct midday sunlight.
Plants, he noted, serve more than a decorative purpose. Trees, climbing plants, and large planters can help cool the surrounding area, improve air quality, and provide privacy.
Stone paving and treated wooden flooring work particularly well in gardens, while natural fabrics and earthy colours, including green and olive tones, help create harmony with the surrounding landscape.
Hatem suggested adding an outdoor dining table or family seating area to make the most of long summer evenings.
Rooftop retreats
Wagdy said rooftops have become increasingly popular in modern homes because they offer privacy, open views, and the opportunity to create a complete entertainment space.
However, she identified high temperatures and strong winds as the two main challenges facing rooftop design.
To address these issues, she recommended installing shading elements such as wooden or metal pergolas and movable umbrellas.
Furniture and finishing materials should be able to withstand direct sunlight, while light colours are preferable because they absorb less heat.
Wagdy also advised leaving sufficient open space for movement and ensuring seating areas are positioned to take advantage of the best views.
She suggested dividing rooftops into separate zones, including family seating areas, dining spaces, and green corners featuring heat-resistant plants.
Poolside comfort
Designing seating areas around swimming pools requires a balance between practicality and aesthetics.
Slip-resistant flooring is essential, alongside quick-drying furniture and moisture-resistant materials.
Current design trends favour colours inspired by coastal landscapes, including white, sandy beige, light blue, and natural wood tones.
According to designers, simple lines and restrained colour palettes often create a more luxurious appearance than heavily decorated spaces.
Providing adequate shaded areas is also essential for comfortable daytime use.
Lighting and functionality
Hatem described lighting as one of the most important elements in outdoor spaces after sunset.
He recommended combining different lighting levels, including general illumination and decorative lighting that highlights key features of the space.
Warm lighting, he added, contributes to a sense of comfort and relaxation.
A successful outdoor seating area is one that homeowners can enjoy daily. Hatem warned against common mistakes such as using furniture not designed for outdoor conditions, overcrowding small spaces, and neglecting shading solutions.
He also cautioned that excessive colours and decorative elements can reduce elegance and create visual clutter.
Current outdoor design trends favour simplicity, natural materials such as wood and stone, earthy colour palettes, and multifunctional spaces that can accommodate relaxation, dining, and entertaining within the same area.
