According to S&P Global Ratings, the assessment reflects Afreximbank’s robust enterprise risk profile, expanding policy relevance, and increasing role as a countercyclical institution supporting African economies during periods of global and regional uncertainty.
The ratings agency highlighted the Bank’s critical contribution to advancing intra-African trade, supporting the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and developing innovative platforms and solutions that promote regional integration and economic resilience.
S&P noted that Afreximbank’s strategic importance has strengthened significantly over the past decade, supported by strong shareholder backing and a growing capital base. The Bank’s total assets increased to $42.3 billion in 2025, compared with $7.1 billion in 2015, while shareholders’ equity rose to $8.4 billion from $1.3 billion over the same period.
Commenting on the rating, Dr George Elombi, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Afreximbank, said the assessment represents a strong endorsement of the Bank’s financial strength, stability, and international credibility.
“This rating reflects the Bank’s solid capital position, strong liquidity, high-quality assets, and the unwavering confidence placed in the institution by African governments and stakeholders,” Elombi said.
S&P Global Ratings also acknowledged Afreximbank’s role in helping African economies navigate major external shocks, including the global financial crisis, commodity price downturns, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Russia-Ukraine war.
The agency further highlighted the Bank’s recent launch of a $10 billion Gulf Crisis Response Programme (GCRP) aimed at protecting African and Caribbean economies from the economic impact of tensions and conflicts in the Middle East.
Afreximbank has continued to strengthen trade and investment infrastructure across the continent through initiatives such as the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), the Africa Trade Gateway, the AfCFTA Adjustment Fund, and a range of trade finance, project finance, advisory, and institutional support services.
The Stable Outlook reflects S&P’s expectation that Afreximbank will continue to benefit from strong shareholder support, sustained capital growth, and its increasingly important role in supporting African economies during periods of economic stress.
The Bank remains committed to transforming the structure of African trade by promoting industrialization, expanding intra-African commerce, strengthening regional value chains, and enhancing Africa’s participation in global trade.
