The financing, the EBRD’s first partnership with a consumer finance company in Egypt and the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean (SEMED) region, will enable households to purchase energy-saving and renewable energy products through affordable and flexible payment plans.
The facility aims to expand access to green technologies at the household level, helping consumers lower energy costs while promoting the adoption of climate-friendly products across the country.
The EBRD will also provide a 74,900 euro technical assistance package to support Valu in developing dedicated green finance products, strengthening the identification and monitoring of eligible green investments, and building a pipeline of sustainable retail assets.
Through Valu’s digital platform and extensive merchant network, the initiative is expected to channel climate-related investment directly to consumers, extending green finance beyond businesses to individual households.
“This project marks the EBRD’s first partnership with a consumer finance company in Egypt and the SEMED region, as well as our first collaboration with Valu,” said Mark Davis, EBRD managing director for the SEMED region.
He said the partnership reflects the bank’s commitment to leveraging fintech platforms to expand access to sustainable finance, enabling households to obtain energy-efficient and climate-friendly solutions on affordable terms.
For his part, Karim Riad, chief financial officer of Valu, said the transaction underscores the EBRD’s confidence in the company’s ability to scale up access to green finance in Egypt.
He added that integrating dedicated green financing solutions into Valu’s platform would help consumers make more sustainable purchasing decisions while maintaining affordability and convenience and strengthening the company’s long-term funding base.
Founded in 2017, Valu is Egypt’s leading consumer fintech platform and the first listed fintech consumer finance company on the Egyptian Exchange. The company pioneered the buy-now-pay-later model in the Middle East and North Africa and currently offers financing of up to 60 months through a network of over 8,500 merchants.
Egypt has been a member of the EBRD since its establishment. Since 2012, the bank has invested over 14.6 billion euros in 227 projects across the country.
