According to the Egyptian presidency, El-Sisi’s meetings took place on the sidelines of the 52nd edition of the Group of Seven (G7) Summit, held under the French Presidency of the group from 15 to 17 June in Évian-les-Bains.
During his meeting with the EU council chief, the president welcomed the agreement reached between the US and Iran and said he looked forward to helping reduce the escalation witnessed in the region in recent months.
He reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to continuing cooperation with the EU to achieve comprehensive and sustainable solutions to the various crises facing the region, particularly in light of the convergence of views between both sides on many issues.
El-Sisi also stressed the importance of adhering to the implementation of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan for the Gaza Strip, maintaining calm in the enclave, ensuring the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid, and swiftly launching the early recovery and reconstruction process.
For his part, Costa affirmed the importance of close coordination between Egypt and the EU in promoting regional and international peace and resolving regional crises.
He further praised Egypt’s role in fostering stability in the region as well as Cairo’s efforts to support the negotiation process between Washington and Tehran.
The EU council chief also commended the close cooperation between Egypt and the EU in combating terrorism and irregular migration, emphasizing the importance of this cooperation for peace and prosperity on both shores of the Mediterranean
Egypt-EU relations
During the meeting, President El-Sisi praised the trajectory of Egypt-EU relations, particularly following their elevation to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in March 2024 in Cairo and the convening of the first Egypt-EU Summit in October 2025 in Brussels.
He stressed the importance of ongoing efforts to strengthen cooperation across various fields, especially in the economic, trade, and investment sectors, while also enhancing political coordination to support regional peace and stability.
Costa, in turn, commended the existing strategic partnership between Egypt and the EU as well as the progress achieved in bilateral relations, affirming the EU’s commitment to further strengthening this partnership in ways that serve the interests of both sides.
According to the Egyptian presidency, El-Sisi held a separate meeting with von der Leyen, where they also addressed regional developments and bilateral ties.
During the meeting, El-Sisi reviewed the key principles guiding Egypt’s position, stressing the need for sustainable political solutions to all regional crises in a manner that preserves the sovereignty of states and the resources of their peoples.
He reaffirmed Egypt’s support for efforts that helped secure an agreement between the US and Iran, preventing a return to military escalation and safeguarding the security and sovereignty of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, as well as freedom of international navigation.
Addressing the Israeli war on Gaza, the president also stressed Egypt’s commitment to working with the EU to implement the agreement ending the war in Gaza.
The president further highlighted Egypt’s support for Lebanon’s stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, as well as Egypt’s efforts to resolve the crisis in Sudan and alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.
For her part, the EU commission chief praised Egypt’s responsible approach to regional crises, highlighting the significant convergence between Egyptian and European positions, which she said enables both sides to play positive roles in resolving current conflicts.
Egypt-EU partnership
During the meeting, El-Sisi and von der Leyen also addressed joint ties, where the president commended the momentum and positive trajectory of Egypt-EU relations, stressing Egypt’s determination to deepen these ties and explore opportunities for cooperation in innovative and non-traditional sectors.
He pointed to ongoing efforts to implement the outcomes of the 2024 Investment Conference and the economic event held on the sidelines of the Egypt-EU Summit in October 2025.
El-Sisi also reviewed the structural economic reforms undertaken by the state to improve the competitiveness and resilience of the Egyptian economy and enhance the investment environment, expressing hope that these efforts would be reflected in increased European business activity in Egypt.
For her part, the EU official expressed the EU Commission’s and institutions’ satisfaction with the positive pace of cooperation with Egypt across all sectors.
She further praised Egypt’s economic reform efforts in recent years, as well as its achievements in combating terrorism and irregular migration, particularly given the significant economic and humanitarian burdens resulting from regional crises.
She reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to working closely with Egypt to address shared challenges, build peace, and strengthen cooperation across the Mediterranean.
El-Sisi’s meetings took place on the sidelines of his participation in the G7 summit, marking Egypt’s second appearance in this high-level global gathering, with the first being at the 45th summit in 2019, during Egypt's presidency of the African Union (AU).
According to the Egyptian presidency, President El-Sisi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with participating world leaders, including a meeting with US President Donald Trump.
