Benha University Hospitals surgeons save child after knife penetrated skull

A neurosurgery team at Benha University Hospitals saved the life of a five-year-old girl during a delicate operation late on Monday that lasted several consecutive hours after a sharp knife pierced her skull and reached brain tissue, the Medical Syndicate said.

The girl arrived at the hospital’s emergency department in an extremely critical condition, prompting immediate coordination between the hospital administration and the neurosurgery department to prepare her for urgent surgery, the syndicate said in a statement.

The surgical team successfully removed the knife without life-threatening complications, with the operation producing reassuring results, the statement added.

The child is currently receiving close care and monitoring in the pediatric intensive care unit, and her condition is stable.

The operation was performed by a specialized team of neurosurgeons and anesthesiologists, including MD Emad Zeyada, assistant lecturer of neurosurgery; MD Diaa El-Nagdy; and MD Esraa Yasser.

The anesthesia team was led by MD Wafaa Nasser, assistant lecturer of anesthesia, alongside anesthesia residents MD Ahmed Ibrahim, MD Omar El-Hamshary, and MD Nora Ali.

The Medical Syndicate congratulated the medical and nursing teams at Benha University Hospitals, praising what it described as a distinguished medical achievement that reflected professionalism, humanity, and dedication to duty.

The case comes as Egypt continues to expand the capacity of its university hospitals, which provide a major share of advanced and tertiary healthcare services nationwide.

Former Higher Education Minister Ayman Ashour said in December that university hospitals treated nearly 32 million patients in 2025 and carried out around 658,000 surgeries, including 390,000 advanced procedures.

He said the network had reached 146 university hospitals nationwide and provides about 75 percent of Egypt’s tertiary healthcare services.

The network includes around 38,000 beds, nearly 5,000 intensive care beds, and about 1,200 neonatal incubators, supported by more than 30,000 faculty members as well as nursing, technical, and administrative staff.
