Transport Minister Kamel Al-Wazir announced on Friday that the newly opened section extends from Cairo Stadium Station to El-Mosheer Tantawy Station and includes six stations: Cairo Stadium, Hisham Barakat, Al-Azhar University, Seventh District, Field Marshal Ahmed Ismail, and Jehan El-Sadat.
With the launch of the second phase, the East Nile Monorail will operate across its full 56.5-km route, serving all 22 stations between Cairo Stadium in Nasr City and the City of Justice in the New Capital.
The service will run daily from 6:00am to 9:00pm.
Al-Wazir said the extension would make travel easier for commuters from Greater Cairo—including Cairo, Giza, and Qalyubia—to New Cairo and the New Capital through an interchange with Metro Line 3 at Cairo Stadium Station.
He added that the monorail would also improve access to residential districts, business centres, conference and exhibition venues, hospitals, hotels, mosques, shopping malls, universities, schools, local and international company headquarters, sports clubs, and stadiums across Nasr City, New Cairo, and the New Capital.
According to the Ministry of Transport, the six newly opened stations will serve several key destinations. Cairo Stadium Station connects passengers to Metro Line 3 and serves the Cairo International Stadium complex, Al-Zohour Sporting Club, Sonesta Cairo Hotel, and the State Information Service headquarters.
Hisham Barakat Station provides access to Rabaa Al-Adawiya Mosque, Dar Al Fouad Hospital, specialized medical centres along Al-Tayaran Street, and nearby residential developments.
Al-Azhar University Station serves the university's main campus, student dormitories, the Islamic Research Academy, Al-Azhar schools and institutes, Nouri Khattab Mosque, and the Health Insurance Hospital.
The Seventh District Station serves one of Nasr City's oldest residential and commercial areas. These include the Police Hospital, schools, Nasr City Court, and the Seventh District commercial market.
Field Marshal Ahmed Ismail Station provides access to the Atomic Energy Authority, Enppi headquarters, several international schools, and Al-Salam Mosque. Jehan El-Sadat Station, on the other hand, serves the Shinzo Abe Axis, the Wafaa and Amal Axis, and Town Gas headquarters.
Egypt began operating its first monorail passenger service in May, launching the initial phase of the East Nile Monorail linking New Cairo with the New Capital as part of the country's latest expansion of green mass transit.
The opening of the second phase now completes the 22-station East Nile line, further integrating it with Cairo's wider rail network through connections to Metro Line 3 and the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system.
The ministry said the East Nile Monorail is part of Egypt's integrated public transport network, with interchange stations linking it to Metro Line 3 at Cairo Stadium and the LRT at the Arts and Culture City Station. Plans include connections to Metro Line 4 at Hisham Barakat Station and Metro Line 6 at El Narges Station.
The ministry also announced that a 50 percent discount on full-fare tickets will continue to be offered every Friday and Saturday, as well as on official public holidays, to encourage citizens to visit the New Capital and explore its landmarks.
