The visit was intended to express support for the resilience of the Palestinian people and to include a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, "Abu Mazen," in Ramallah.
The spokesperson said Secretary-General Fahmy had chosen the Palestinian Authority and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the occupied territories as the destination for his first foreign visit, given the centrality of the Palestinian cause to Arab priorities.
He added that Palestinians continue to live under siege in their towns and cities, surrounded by expanding settlements and roads used exclusively by Israeli settlers. He said Palestinians remain vulnerable to attacks and brutality by armed settlers, who enjoy the protection of the occupation state and are, on many occasions, encouraged by it.
The spokesperson stressed the need to hold Israel accountable for its ongoing violations against Palestinians.
He said defending the two-state solution requires active and sustained action by all countries that support a just peace to expose occupation practices and support Palestinian resilience in the face of unprecedented repression and escalating brutal violence.
