In a statement, the Public Prosecution affirmed it seized assets exceeded EGP 7.89 billion and approximately USD 318.31 million, in addition to a range of other foreign currencies and several confiscated real estate properties.
The prosecution revealed it had dismantled complex financial structures involving cryptocurrency trading.
It tracked illicit transfers conducted through blockchain technology, seized a number of unlicensed cryptocurrency wallets, and secured digital evidence against those responsible.
The Public Prosecution stressed that digital environments, regardless of their complexity, remain subject to the rule of law and do not shield offenders from legal accountability.
The statement added that all the seized cryptocurrency assets has been liquidated and transfered to the public treasury.
The Public Prosecution reaffirmed its commitment to taking firm action against anyone seeking to undermine Egypt's economic security or exploit emerging technologies to conceal or legitimize illicit funds, stressing that the law will continue to pursue the proceeds of crime wherever they are found and in whatever form they take.
In recent years, Egyptian authorities have intensified efforts to combat financial crimes, tracing illicit assets, and enhancing cooperation among law enforcement agencies to address increasingly sophisticated laundering methods.
In 2022, the House of Representatives approved government-drafted legislative amendments to the 20-year-old anti-money laundering law.
In 2023, Egypt launched the new stage of the Egyptian Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Combatting Unit (EMLCU).
