The holiday will apply to employees of ministries, government departments, public authorities, local administration units, public-sector companies, and public business-sector companies, according to a cabinet decree.
Examinations, where scheduled, will proceed on the dates set by the relevant authorities.
The holiday marks the 74th anniversary of the 23 July 1952 Revolution, when the Free Officers Movement overthrew King Farouk and brought Egypt’s monarchy to an end.
The republic was formally declared in June 1953, with Mohamed Naguib becoming the country’s first president.
Led by officers including Naguib and Gamal Abdel-Nasser, the revolution ushered in sweeping political and socioeconomic changes, including agrarian reform. It paved the way for the withdrawal of British forces. It also became an influential symbol for anti-colonial and national liberation movements across the Arab world and Africa.
