During the meeting at the IAEA headquarters, FM Abdelatty reviewed Egypt's intensive contacts with regional and international parties aimed at containing tensions and preventing the conflict from spreading.
“Political and diplomatic solutions remain the only way to address the region’s crises,” Abdelatty said.
He warned against measures that could further inflame tensions or expand the conflict, saying the consequences would threaten regional security and stability and disrupt international trade, global supply chains, and energy markets.
The talks also addressed cooperation between Egypt and the IAEA, including the agency’s technical support for the Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant and Egypt’s broader peaceful nuclear programme.
Abdelatty said the IAEA’s Technical Cooperation Programme represented “a fundamental pillar” in supporting Egypt’s nuclear programme through assistance for the Dabaa project, research reactors, personnel training, and the development of institutional and technical capabilities.
He also praised the agency’s continued coordination with Egypt, highlighted by Grossi’s recent participation in the installation ceremony for the reactor pressure vessel of Dabaa’s second nuclear unit.
The participation reflected “the depth of the strategic partnership between Egypt and the agency in the peaceful uses of atomic energy,” Abdelatty said.
For his part, Grossi praised Egypt’s progress in implementing the Dabaa plant, describing it as “one of the most prominent peaceful nuclear energy projects in Africa.”
He also commended Egypt’s role in supporting regional stability, reducing tensions, and promoting diplomatic solutions to the crises facing the Middle East.
The meeting came one week after Egypt installed the reactor pressure vessel for the second unit of the Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, marking the project’s transition to a more advanced stage of construction.
Grossi attended the 9 July ceremony alongside Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev.
The Unit 2 reactor pressure vessel was installed seven months after the corresponding component was placed in the plant's first unit. Rosatom said the next phase would include welding the reactor's main coolant pipeline, while Grossi reaffirmed the IAEA's support for Egypt in nuclear safety, security, and technical assistance.
Thursday’s talks also took place amid renewed military exchanges between the United States and Iran and fresh Iranian attacks targeting Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan. Egypt has condemned the attacks as a dangerous escalation and a violation of the three Arab countries’ sovereignty and territorial integrity.
