The embassy also reaffirmed the United States' continued support for the WFP’s operations in Sudan, helping deliver critical food and nutrition assistance to people affected by the conflict, which it described as "the world’s largest humanitarian crisis."
Much of the US funding for humanitarian efforts in Sudan is provided through its contributions to the Sudan Humanitarian Fund, which is managed by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the embassy added.
During the announcement event in Cairo, attended by WFP Egypt Country Director and Representative Rawad Halabi, Silverman reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to ending the conflict in Sudan.
He highlighted the ongoing efforts of Massad Boulos, the US president’s senior advisor for African and Arab Affairs, in coordination with Egypt and the other members of the Quad mechanism, which comprises Egypt, the United States, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia.
Silverman said these efforts aim to advance a negotiated settlement, beginning with a humanitarian truce in Sudan.
He added that the latest funding reinforces the United States' commitment to supporting Egypt in providing life-saving humanitarian assistance to people displaced by the war in Sudan.
Egypt has repeatedly warned of shortcomings in international burden-sharing for refugees and migrants, saying that international assistance does not match the growing needs of the more than 10 million foreigners, migrants, and refugees the country hosts.
Despite the significant strain on state resources, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to providing basic services to millions of refugees living in the country within its available capabilities.
In November 2024, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said Egypt has become the largest host country for Sudanese refugees fleeing the ongoing war.
Sudan's war, which erupted in April 2023, has killed tens of thousands of people, with some estimates putting the death toll at more than 200,000. It has displaced millions and triggered one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises.
