According to the Secretary-General's official spokesperson, Fahmy expressed his deep appreciation for President Mahmoud Abbas' role in the Palestinian national project and his leadership of Palestine at a critical time marked by mounting pressures.
During the meeting, Fahmy reaffirmed the Arab League's support for the State of Palestine, saying that strengthening the resilience of the Palestinian state and its people remains a top priority at the current stage.
He noted that Israel was seeking to eliminate any prospect of a two-state solution.
According to the spokesperson, Fahmy said the Israeli government was pursuing the de facto annexation of the West Bank by intensifying settlement activity, displacement, forced transfer, and the siege and isolation of Palestinian cities.
He also stated that Israel, as the occupying state, is aiding and abetting settler violence against Palestinians.
Fahmy said confronting these pernicious plans was an Arab responsibility, adding that supporters of the two-state solution worldwide also had a duty to oppose them.
The spokesperson added that Fahmy listened to Abbas' assessment of the priorities for the current phase and his views on the international steps needed to isolate Israel and build on growing global support for the Palestinian cause.
According to the spokesperson, Abbas also stressed the importance of engaging younger generations, whose worldview, he said, has been shaped by the atrocities that Israel committed against the Palestinians.
For his part, Fahmy stressed that support for the Palestinian people and the Palestinian Authority must go beyond rhetoric. He highlighted the severe financial pressures facing the Palestinian Authority as a result of Israel's withholding of Palestinian tax revenues, stressing the need for additional financial support to address the widening budget deficit.
The spokesperson quoted Fahmy as saying that Palestine would remain a central cause for the Arab League. He also stressed the importance of unifying the Palestinian position and welcomed the announcement that legislative elections would be held next November.
The spokesperson added that Fahmy was keen to hear Abbas' assessment of developments in Gaza.
According to the spokesperson, Fahmy stressed that the Palestinian Authority must play a central role in any future arrangements for Gaza, reiterating that the strip is an integral part of the future Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
