The figures were released on Thursday in CAPMAS' annual Environment and Climate Change Statistics report for 2024, which also highlighted key environmental and climate indicators.
According to the report, the highest monthly average maximum temperature recorded in Egypt during 2024 was 45.3 degrees Celsius in June at the Aswan meteorological station. The highest monthly average minimum temperature reached 31.3 degrees Celsius in July at the Hurghada station.
The Ras El Tin station in Alexandria recorded the country's highest average monthly relative humidity at 75 percent in July.
The report said protected marine and coastal ecosystems accounted for 7.3 percent of Egypt's total marine and coastal ecosystem area in 2023.
Electricity generated from renewable energy sources, including wind and solar power, reached 11,631 gigawatt-hours during fiscal year 2023/2024, marking a 9.3 percent increase compared with the previous fiscal year.
Renewables accounted for 5.1 percent of Egypt's total electricity generation in 2023/2024, up slightly from 5 percent a year earlier, according to the report.
The number of vehicles converted to run on natural gas also increased by 9 percent, rising from 507,300 at the end of fiscal year 2022/2023 to 553,500 by the end of fiscal year 2023/2024.
CAPMAS also reported that India was the largest importer among the top five destinations for hazardous waste shipments transiting the Suez Canal and Egyptian ports in 2023, receiving 44,500 tons, while Canada was the largest exporter among the top five countries, with 55,000 tons.
The report added that total government spending on environmental protection increased by 73.3 percent in fiscal year 2023/2024 compared with fiscal year 2019/2020.
