The ministry said the suspect was caught after breaking into his father’s warehouse in Alexandria on Sunday, where two vintage cars, including Nasser's former vehicle, were being stored.

According to the ministry, the father told the police that he had bought the two cars at a public auction in 1981. The licence plates of Nasser's former car were surrendered to the traffic authorities in 1995 after it was taken off the road.

Police said the suspect was caught by residents while using a hand grinder, a hacksaw, and two screwdrivers to cut metal parts from the vehicles, intending to sell them to scrap dealers.

The suspect was arrested, and the Public Prosecution ordered that he remain in custody pending an investigation, the ministry said.

The ministry did not disclose further details about the vehicle. Egyptian media reports identified it as a 1961 Cadillac that was used as an official presidential car by Nasser before being sold at a public auction.

Late Egyptian President Gamal Abdel-Nasser led the 1952 revolution that toppled Egypt's British-backed monarchy, reshaping the country's political landscape and influencing the Arab world.

He ruled Egypt from 1954 until he died in 1970.
