The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) hosted two separate delegations from the Bank of Ghana seeking to benefit from Egypt's expertise in digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), data governance, and cybersecurity, according to a CBE statement on Monday.

The first delegation's multi-day visit focused on Egypt's integrated data management and governance systems, as well as supervisory and regulatory technology applications, and the use of AI to support monetary policy, inflation forecasting, and labour market analysis.

Egypt has strengthened its position in government-led digital transformation, with the CBE expanding digital financial services and improving cross-border payments.

These efforts are part of Egypt's Digital Transformation Strategy, which aims to expand digital finance, reduce reliance on cash, strengthen the banking and national payments infrastructure, enhance regulatory and legislative frameworks, and adopt modern technologies.

The delegation also examined the CBE's efforts to strengthen oversight, improve data collection and analysis, and use AI chatbots.

It reviewed the bank's key strategic initiatives, including the national payment infrastructure, the Instant Payment Network (IPN), the InstaPay application, tokenization technologies that support secure digital payments, and the electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) system.

The second delegation focused on the CBE's operational framework for its specialized cybersecurity division and its risk assessment approach through the second edition of the Egyptian Financial Cybersecurity Framework, which is being prepared for launch.

The updated framework aims to introduce more flexible supervisory and assessment tools to strengthen the protection of banks and financial institutions against evolving cyber threats.

The second delegation also reviewed the mechanisms and frameworks for authorizing fintech applications and the governance of digital financial services and other technological solutions before they are launched in the local market.

Cyberattacks increased by 53 percent in 2025, with attacks rising sharply across Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa as the digital economy expanded alongside the misuse of AI tools.

Egypt is also strengthening its position as a regional cybersecurity hub. Under its national AI Strategy, the government aims to increase AI's contribution to GDP to 7.7 percent by 2030.

In 2024, Egypt's cybersecurity industry was valued at EGP 15 billion (more than $295 million). Major telecommunications companies, including Vodafone Egypt, have obtained cybersecurity certifications as AI and data play an increasingly important role in the economy.

The visits by both delegations are part of the CBE's efforts to expand cooperation and capacity-building with African central banks to advance financial and banking integration across the continent.
