The 42-year-old Tunisian tactician will lead his national team through the 2027 and 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaigns, as well as the 2030 World Cup, which is set to be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.
The FTF have also unveiled Chaabani’s backroom staff, with Mourad Melki and Seifallah Hosni appointed assistant coaches, while Khaled Maghzaoui takes over as goalkeeping coach, Hatem Boulila will serve as fitness coach, and Wessam Safwat will handle performance analysis.
Earlier, Moroccan side RS Berkane confirmed Chaabani’s departure to take up the national team job following an official approach from the FTF, though he had been under contract with the Moroccan club until June 2027.
Chaabani replaces Frenchman Herve Renard, who was appointed on an interim basis for the World Cup following the dismissal of compatriot Sabri Lamouchi after a heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden in the group stage.
Chaabani guided RS Berkane to historic success during his two-and-a-half-year tenure, securing their first-ever Moroccan league title and the CAF Confederation Cup in the 2024-25 season, completing a remarkable domestic and continental double.
He had a distinguished playing career at Espérance de Tunis, as well as stints in Turkey and Saudi Arabia, before transitioning into coaching with CS Hammam-Lif and as an assistant at Espérance.
Chaabani took sole charge of Esperance in 2018, leading them to back-to-back CAF Champions League titles in 2018 and 2019, along with five consecutive league titles between 2017 and 2021.
The Tunisian tactician is a familiar name to Egyptian football fans, having previously coached Port Said’s side Masry in 2021-22 and Ceramica Cleopatra in 2023, before a brief second spell at Esperance later that year.
