During a visit to the port, Al-Wazir also conveyed the thanks of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, as well as his own appreciation for what he described as their professionalism in handling Wednesday's incident.
According to the transport ministry, the crews used four tugboats to escort a storage vessel about 10 kilometres away from the port, while another four tugboats towed a regasification vessel around 3.5 kilometres offshore.
The crews also contained the fire using water cannons until it was extinguished, preventing it from spreading to the port or nearby facilities, the minister said.
Al-Wazir described the operation as evidence of the crews' operational readiness and professionalism, saying their response reflected "professionalism, efficiency, courage, discipline, patriotism, and dedication to duty."
He also thanked other port workers, saying they had maintained normal port operations and ensured the continued movement of ships and cargo despite the emergency.
The minister said the response demonstrated the capability of Egypt's maritime transport sector to continue operating under difficult conditions, adding that Damietta Port remains part of the country's wider strategy to develop maritime transport and strengthen its role as a regional logistics and trade hub.
The visit came a day after a fire broke out aboard a regasification vessel and a storage vessel at Damietta Port on Egypt's Mediterranean coast. The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources said no injuries or fatalities were reported.
On Thursday, the cabinet stated that the preliminary investigations indicated the fire was caused by a drone attack, although no group has claimed responsibility. It said investigations into the incident are continuing.
Madbouly said Egypt activated emergency measures immediately after the fire and succeeded in containing the incident without disrupting maritime traffic or natural gas supplies.
