The tremor was felt across the Greater Cairo area and several other governorates.
The National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) initially reported the earthquake's magnitude at 5.2 before revising it to 5.5 then 5.6.
According to NRIAG, the earthquake struck at 3:00:36 a.m. local time. In another update, the epicentre was located 38 km from Suez.
The institute did not specify how long the earthquake lasted, although residents reported that the shaking continued for several seconds.
NRIAG said it had not received any reports of casualties or damage to property.
Health Minister Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar ordered the immediate activation of the ministry's emergency response plan and convened the central crisis and emergency operations room in the New Capital, linking it with emergency units across all governorates to monitor the situation around the clock.
Abdel-Ghaffar also instructed public hospitals nationwide to raise their level of preparedness, ensuring emergency departments, intensive care units, ambulance services and rapid response teams were fully operational, with adequate stocks of medicines, medical supplies, blood and oxygen.
The Health Ministry said the country's health situation remained stable and that no earthquake-related injuries had been reported as of Monday morning. It urged anyone requiring urgent medical assistance to contact its emergency hotlines on 105, 137 or 123.
