Screenshots of Google’s full-screen Earthquake Alert rapidly spread across Egyptian social media, where users compared when their warnings arrived. They joked that Android phones alerted their owners, while many iPhones remained silent.
iPhones also support earthquake warnings, but Apple’s built-in system is not available worldwide. Apple says its Enhanced Safety Alerts are currently available only in the United States and Taiwan.
iPhones in certain countries, including Japan, can receive earthquake warnings supplied by government agencies through supported carriers. Egypt is not currently listed among the markets supporting Apple’s earthquake-alert service, explaining why many Egyptian iPhone users received no corresponding warning during Monday’s tremor.
Google and the Egyptian authorities have not disclosed how many notifications were sent in Egypt. However, Android accounted for 88.85 percent of mobile operating system usage in the country in July, compared to 11.14 percent for iOS, according to Statcounter, a web analytics company that tracks website traffic.
The figures are estimates based on web usage, rather than an official count of devices or users. Nevertheless, Android’s overwhelming market share suggests that Google’s warning system could have reached millions of people across the country.
Receiving an alert also depends on several factors, including device compatibility, location settings, internet connectivity, and whether earthquake notifications are enabled.
Egypt’s National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) said stations belonging to the National Seismic Network recorded a magnitude-5.6 earthquake on Monday, 3 August.
According to the institute’s statement, the tremor occurred at a depth of 26 kilometres and was located around 61 kilometres northeast of Sharm El-Sheikh.
The earthquake was felt across Greater Cairo, Suez, and several other governorates, waking residents as beds moved, windows rattled, and hanging lights began to sway.
A warning, not a prediction
The alert prompted many users to ask how their phones could know an earthquake was coming when scientists say earthquakes cannot be predicted.
Google’s notification was an early warning, rather than a prediction. The system detected the earthquake after it began and attempted to warn people farther from its source before the stronger seismic waves reached them.
Earthquakes produce different types of waves. The faster P-waves are generally weaker, while the slower S-waves produce stronger shaking. Digital warnings can travel through telecommunications networks faster than seismic waves move through the ground.
Depending on a user’s distance from the earthquake, this can provide several seconds of warning. People close to the source may receive the notification only as the shaking starts, or after they have already felt it.
Google’s Android Earthquake Alerts system uses accelerometers embedded in smartphones to detect movement. When several stationary phones in the same area register similar vibrations, anonymized signals are sent to Google’s servers.
The system analyses the signals, estimates the earthquake’s location and strength, and sends notifications to users expected to experience shaking. Google describes the network as a supplement to official seismic-monitoring systems, rather than a replacement.
Android versus iPhone
The difference between Android and iPhone alerts quickly became one of Egypt’s leading social-media conversations.
Android users shared screenshots of their warnings, with some saying the notification woke them before they noticed the movement. Others reported receiving it only seconds before, or while, their homes were shaking.
Many iPhone users, meanwhile, joked about why their more expensive devices had not warned them. Memes portrayed Android phones detecting danger while iPhones slept through the earthquake.
Some users initially believed Google had predicted the event. Posts explaining the distinction between prediction and early warning subsequently circulated, noting that the system responds to an earthquake already in progress.
Behind the humour was genuine alarm. Residents described waking to swaying lamps, moving furniture, and rattling windows, while some left their buildings and waited outside until the shaking stopped.
Limited damage reported
The Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) raised its preparedness level, activated its operations centre and emergency plan, and began coordinating with response teams and relevant authorities shortly after the tremor.
It issued its first statement at 3:20 am. By 7 am, its operations centre had received calls from residents seeking information and reassurance.
The ERC dispatched teams following a report that a balcony had fallen in Suez and another concerning the partial collapse of a building in Cairo’s Rod El-Farag district. Inspections found no injuries at either location.
The organization stated that its teams continued to inspect sites mentioned in reports and that it had received no reports of earthquake-related deaths.
Separate local reports recorded two minor injuries. A man in Abu Hammad, Sharqiya, suffered a hand wound from broken glass, while a woman sustained minor injuries after part of the ceiling of an old house fell in Suez’s Arbaeen district.
Health Minister Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar activated the nationwide health emergency plan, convened the ministry’s crisis room, and raised preparedness at hospitals, emergency departments, and intensive care units.
Although the earthquake caused widespread anxiety, for many Egyptians, its most memorable moment came before the shaking itself, when their phones warned them that the ground was about to move.
