The 62-year-old coach, who is of Bosnian origin, took charge of the team in 2024, succeeding Djamel Belmadi. He leaves the position just two months after extending his contract through 2028.
The federation stated that its relationship with Petković and his coaching staff "officially ended today (Monday) by mutual agreement."
Under Petković's leadership, Algeria reached the knockout stage of the World Cup for only the second time in its history, after their first appearance in the knockout rounds in the 2014 edition. The achievement was aided by the tournament's expanded format, which featured 48 national teams.
However, Algeria's campaign ended in the Round of 32 with a 2–0 defeat to Switzerland.
The Greens also failed to impress at the Africa Cup of Nations in January, exiting the tournament in the quarterfinals after a 2–0 loss to Nigeria.
The Algerian Football Federation did not disclose the identity of the coach who will succeed Petković.
