In a statement, the NCHR said that the follow-up comes as part of its constitutional and legal mandate to monitor the state of human rights and public freedoms.
While stressing its respect for the independence of the Public Prosecution, the Council underlined that any suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a final court ruling.
The NCHR highlighted fair trial guarantees—including the right to a defence, access to legal counsel, and examination of case documents—as essential pillars of the rule of law.
The NCHR further stressed that pretrial detention is subject to the safeguards and controls established by law and should only be used when necessary in the interests of the investigation.
It called for regular judicial reviews to verify the legitimacy of continued detention, urging greater reliance on legal alternatives in line with Egypt's new criminal procedures law and international standards.
The NCHR added that it will continue following the proceedings, expressing confidence that the judiciary will uphold fair trial standards and protect citizens' rights.
On 16 July, the Supreme State Security Prosecution ordered the detention of Zahran for 15 days pending investigations, Al-Masry Al-Youm reported, adding that he faces accusations of spreading false news and statements, as well as using social media platforms to promote a terrorist act
