The report, titled “Green Logistics: Towards a Sustainable Supply Chain Model,” is part of the IDSC’s “Information Reports” series and examines green logistics regionally and globally.
According to estimates by the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) through May 2025, the canal is one of the world’s most important waterways as it provides the shortest route connecting East and West without the need to pass through locks.
The canal also has a high capacity to accommodate ships of different types and sizes, including around 62.2 percent of oil tankers, 92.6 percent of bulk carriers, and 100 percent of container ships, car carriers and general cargo vessels, in addition to the entire global fleet of other vessel types.
The canal’s capacity strengthens Egypt’s position as a global logistics hub, the report said.
Egypt also has several commercial seaports that represent a key component of the maritime transport industry, with nearly 90 percent of the country’s foreign trade transported through seaports.
The country has 19 seaports on the Mediterranean and Red seas, including 14 existing ports undergoing development and five new ports currently under construction. These projects are expected to further strengthen Egypt’s position as a regional hub for maritime transport and logistics services.
The transport and storage sector, which includes logistics activities, accounted for an average of 5 percent of Egypt’s gross domestic product (GDP) between fiscal years 2015/2016 and 2024/2025, with the sector’s GDP contribution recording continuous growth over the past decade, according to the report.
The sector employed 8.7 percent of Egypt’s total workforce, equivalent to around 2.9 million workers, out of 33.3 million employed people in the first quarter of 2026.
The transport and storage sector added 17,100 jobs in 2023 and 2024, according to data from Egypt’s Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).
Foreign currency proceeds from transport services reached $9.4 billion in 2024/2025, highlighting the logistics sector’s importance as a key source of foreign currency for Egypt.
The report said Egypt’s freight and logistics market was valued at $10.93 billion in 2025 and is expected to reach around $14.66 billion by 2031.
The market structure accounted for around 31.22 percent of the total logistics market in 2025, driven by continued flows of raw material imports and finished-product exports.
Freight transport accounted for the largest share of Egypt’s logistics market at 59.73 percent in 2025, driven by the large volumes transported for the manufacturing, construction and agriculture sectors.
Globally, the green logistics services market generated revenues of $2.4 trillion in 2024 and is expected to reach $4.5 trillion by 2030, representing an 87.5 percent increase.
The projected growth reflects a strong global shift toward adopting environmentally sustainable practices across the logistics sector.
North America is expected to lead global markets in average growth of the green logistics market between 2024 and 2030, at 8.4 percent, followed by Europe at 8 percent.
Meanwhile, the Middle East and Africa are expected to record the lowest growth rate, at 5.6 percent, highlighting the current gap between regions in the adoption and expansion of green logistics practices.
