"The NEC has approved the appointment of coach Pitso to Bafana Bafana, but we still need to tie up some loose ends," SAFA said in a statement on Saturday.
"We will make a formal announcement of the coach next week," SAFA President Danny Jordaan said following an extraordinary meeting of the association’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
South Africa were eliminated from the last 32 of the 2026 World Cup after a narrow 1-0 defeat by co-hosts Canada, prompting coach Hugo Broos to step down following his side’s exit from the tournament.
The 62-year-old Mosimane made a name for himself in Saudi Arabia, leading Al-Ahli to promotion back to the Saudi Pro League and winning the First Division League title.
Before his stint in Saudi Arabia, Mosimane coached South African club Mamelodi Sundowns.
Mosimane was named as the head coach of South Africa national team in 2010 and was handed a four-year contract but the Bafana Bafana failed to qualify for the 2012 African Cup of Nations.
He was the first non-Egyptian African coach for Egyptian giants Ahly between 2020 and 2022, winning six titles, including back-to-back African Champions League trophies.
South Africa’s next challenge will be qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
